THEATER SPOTS
by Barry Daniels
The Ensemble Theatre will end its fifteenth season with a production of Beth Henley's Abundance. The play is set in the Wyoming Territory in the 1860s and tells the story of two mail order brides. It is a fascinating tale that dramatically addresses important feminist issues. Performances are April 15-May 8, Friday and Saturday at 8 pm; Sunday April 17 and May 8 at 3:30 pm; and Sunday, April 24 and 31 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $12 and $14; call 321-2930.
The Cleveland Play House is closing its season with a production of Terence McNally's Lips Together, Teeth Apart. This play takes a hard look at the empty lives and marriages of two heterosexual couples who spend the Fourth of July weekend at the Fire Island house of one of the women's brother, who recently died of AIDS. This is the play Cobb County, Georgia, officials forced a theater to close because it dealt with gay people. Although the play is set against the gay context of Fire Island, it is, in reality, a gay writer's scathing examination of the failure of heterosexual marriage. It is a fine piece of writing that deserved the long run it enjoyed in New York in 1991-1992. Performances are April 19-May 22, TuesdaySunday. For information on ticket prices, performance times and Pay What You Can dates telephone 795-7000.
The Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center and the Play House have planned a benefit evening for the Center on Friday April 29. The evening will begin at 5:30 pm with cocktails and dinner with Dennis Barrie, Executive Director of the Rock and Roll Museum. Preferred seating has been arranged for Lips Together, Teeth Apart at 8:30 pm. After the performance there will be a champagne reception and
dessert with the cast. Tickets are $90 for the whole evening; $50 for the play and reception; and $30 for the play only. For reservations call the Center at 529-1999.
Karamu House is planning a membership campaign for the month of April. Membership benefits include free parking, a 10 percent discount on Bokari Gift Shop purchases, a 10 percent discount on theater tickets, two tickets to any performance, and a quarterly newsletter. The cost to support Karamu House which several of Cleveland's critics think is presenting some of the best theater in Cleveland is $52. For information telephone 795-7070.
The Seventh Annual Performance Art Festival is going into its final two weeks. On April 11 and 12, there will be bills of performance art films at 9:15 pm at the Tower City Cinemas. On April 15 at 5:30 pm, April 16 at 6 pm, and April 17 at 7:30 pm Stephanie Gottlob and Yuji Oka will perform a site-specific kinesthetic movement piece at Shaker Square. At the Cleveland Public Theatre on April 14 and 16 at 8 pm, Stephanie Heyl will perform Slyboots and the Other Woman, I am Gone Wrong. On April 19, 20 at CPT, Crisus will present a theatrical spectacle, Frontiers, which is an exploration of forces beyond our control..
At CPT on April 21 and 22 at 8 pm is a double of pieces. Ric Oquita will perform his underground dance theater piece, Glory Hole. Denise Uyehara will perform Headless Turtleneck Relatives. The Festival closes with a single performance by Karen Finley at the Civic Theatre on April 23 at 8 pm. Finley will present A Certain Level of Denial, a piece that deals with society's response to AIDS and homophobia in the liberal community. For information and reservations telephone 221-6017.
